Manchester is the city where modern football reinvented itself twice. First with United, which grew from a local club into the best-known brand in the sport. Then with City, which went from the shadows to the summit in fifteen years.

Those two stories sit in the same city, but they feel different. Old Trafford carries its history visibly. The Etihad is newer, cleaner in its lines and built on land that used to be industry.

The city around them is not beautiful in the classical sense, and that is precisely the charm. Red brick, canals, old mills that are now bars. The Northern Quarter is full of record shops and pubs that were there before anyone gave the area a name.

What makes Manchester practical: everything is close together and the airport is quick to reach by train. You can leave in the morning and be in the stadium in the afternoon.

The stadiums

Old Trafford, at 74,310 seats, is the largest club ground in England. It sits south-west of the centre on the tram line, and you walk straight there from the stop. The stadium has grown in stages and you can see it: the stands are not all the same height or angle. To some that looks untidy; to others it is proof that a hundred years of history is built into it.

The Etihad Stadium is in the east, within the Etihad Campus the club has developed around the ground in recent years. Also on the tram, also a quarter of an hour from the centre. More spacious, better facilities, and hospitality at a level you will not find in older grounds.

Both stadiums offer tours that can be booked separately, including on non-match days.

When is the best time to go?

The Premier League runs from August to May. Manchester has the advantage of two clubs: if one fixture falls awkwardly, the other often does not.

Allow for shifting dates. Television sets the exact day and time, and that is often only confirmed around six weeks beforehand. With United and City the chance is higher than average, because their matches are almost always broadcast.

The Manchester derby is a category of its own. If you want to see that, starting early is the only thing that works.

Practical

Manchester Airport is fifteen minutes by train from Piccadilly Station, right in the centre. That is one of the easiest arrivals in England.

The most comfortable places to stay are around the Northern Quarter or by Deansgate. From there you walk to the tram and are within half an hour of a ground in either direction.

The tram is called the Metrolink and serves both stadiums. On match day it is full; set off an hour earlier than you think you need to.

Bring valid photo identification. English clubs often issue tickets in the holder's name and check that at the turnstile.
