The Dutch second tier puts clubs with substantial histories alongside clubs on the way up. For a visitor that produces matches in grounds that are often better filled than the level suggests, with a crowd close to the pitch.

The most useful practical difference from the Eredivisie is the matchday. A lot of football is played on Friday evening, so a visit fits into a weekend without taking up the Saturday. That makes it possible to combine a Friday fixture here with an Eredivisie match on the Saturday or Sunday, which is realistic given how short the distances are in the Netherlands.

Entry rules vary by club. Where the Eredivisie largely runs on club cards, that is applied less strictly at this level, though it is not the same everywhere.
