There are cities you visit for the match and take the rest as it comes. Liverpool works the other way round. The city itself is the trip, and the match is the high point in the middle.

The centre is compact and walkable. From the Albert Dock on the waterfront to the Cavern Club on Mathew Street is ten minutes. In between there are more pubs than you can get through in one weekend, and on match day every one of them is full of people in red or in blue.

That is what makes this city unusual: the two clubs share not only a council but often a household. Brothers sitting on opposite sides, neighbours not speaking for a week. It is sharp, but it stays warm. The Merseyside derby is known as one of the few city derbies where both sets of supporters stand among each other.

What people underestimate is how short the journey is. An hour and a half in the air and you are in a city that feels a long way from home.

The stadiums

Anfield is not the prettiest ground in England and everyone there knows it. It is, however, the ground where you hear most clearly where you are. The Kop stands behind one goal and sings You'll Never Walk Alone before kick-off; that is not folklore, it happens every match. The stadium has been extended on two sides in recent years and now holds 61.276.

Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium is the opposite: new, on the water, built into an old dock on the Mersey. It opened in the 2025/26 season and holds almost 53.000. The acoustics have deliberately been kept tight, with the stands close to the pitch.

Both grounds are a fifteen-minute bus or taxi ride from the centre. You can walk it too, but allow three quarters of an hour.

When is the best time to go?

The Premier League runs from August to May. If you want to be sure of seeing a match, look at the weeks without European football; that is when the dates are most settled.

One thing to watch: fixture dates move often. Television ultimately decides whether a match kicks off at 13:30 on Saturday, 17:30 on Saturday or 14:30 on Sunday, and that is sometimes only confirmed six weeks beforehand. So book your hotel with a flexible extra night, or let us put the trip together once the date is fixed.

From November to March the weather is English: fourteen degrees and wet, or four degrees and wet. The football is no worse for it, but bring a coat that can handle wind.

Practical

You can fly into Liverpool John Lennon, twenty minutes from the centre. Manchester has more flights and is three quarters of an hour away by train; often that is the easier option.

The best places to stay are around the Albert Dock or in the Ropewalks area. From there you walk to everything and are close to the buses to both grounds.

Bring valid photo identification, including into the ground. Many English clubs issue tickets in the holder's name and check that at the turnstile. And expect to be let in two to three hours before kick-off with hospitality; that is not compulsory, but it is the best part of the day.
