The Valley has been the home of Charlton Athletic for more than a hundred years. The ground opened in 1919 in an old sand and chalk pit, dug out by the supporters themselves. From 1985 to 1992 the club played elsewhere in London, first at Crystal Palace and then at West Ham United. In December 1992 Charlton returned to The Valley. The stadium was then rebuilt in phases to its current 27,111 seats.
The biggest rivals are Crystal Palace and Millwall, two other clubs from south London. When they are in the same division, such a derby is the match of the year. Away fans sit in the Jimmy Seed Stand, behind one of the goals. From the West Stand you look out over London, as far as the towers of Canary Wharf.
For a visitor, Charlton is easy to reach. Trains run regularly from the main stations in central London to Charlton station, and of all London's airports, London City Airport is the closest to the ground. We can put together a tailor-made football trip with ticket, accommodation and transport. Tickets for ordinary league matches are often available; for the big matches it is different. We arrange official tickets and hospitality with a confirmed seat.
The Valley is in Charlton, in the London borough of Greenwich, in the south-east of the city. The nearest station is Charlton, about a three-minute walk away. Southeastern trains stop there from London Cannon Street, London Bridge and Charing Cross; from London Bridge the journey takes about twenty minutes. The nearest Underground station is North Greenwich on the Jubilee line, by the O2. From there you can walk on or take the bus. Woolwich station on the Elizabeth line is also nearby. Parking in the streets around the ground is limited.
At Charlton, hospitality is based in the lounges and corporate areas of the ground. The difference with a regular ticket is the seat and the service: a good seat, a separate entrance and food and drink in a lounge before and after the match. In a stadium like The Valley, where you sit close to the pitch, it is a comfortable way to experience the game, especially for a corporate guest or a group.
Come well before kick-off and travel by train, as many streets around the ground have permit parking. From London Bridge, Cannon Street or Charing Cross you are in Charlton in no time; after the match the station gets busy, so expect some waiting. We can put together a tailor-made football trip with ticket, accommodation and transport, with a hotel in central London or closer to the ground. If you want to make a day of it, the centre of Greenwich, in the same borough, is a short distance away.
For ordinary league matches there is often availability. For London derbies and matches against clubs with a large following they go quickly; a package with a confirmed seat gives certainty then.
The price varies by opponent and by stand. This page shows the current from-price per type once we have availability for a match.
