The Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor is the home of SV Darmstadt 98, the club known in Germany as Die Lilien. Football has been played on this site since 1921. The old ground has been fully renewed in phases, and since 2023 there has been a modern stadium with four covered stands and room for 17,810.
More than half of the places are on terracing. That makes the ground compact and loud, with the crowd close to the pitch. In 2026/27 Darmstadt play in the 2. Bundesliga. The historic rivals are Kickers Offenbach and Eintracht Frankfurt; in Hesse the matches against those clubs are known as the derby.
Darmstadt is south of Frankfurt. From Frankfurt airport the AirLiner bus takes about thirty minutes to Darmstadt's main station. The Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor is on Nieder-Ramstädter Straße, in the south-east of Darmstadt, in the Bessungen district and close to the Lichtwiese campus of the Technical University. Tram line 2 runs directly from the main station to the Merck-Stadion stop; tram line 9 gets there from the Luisenplatz in the centre. Another route is the Odenwaldbahn train to TU-Lichtwiese station, followed by a walk of about fifteen minutes.
