The Avnet Arena has been the home of 1. FC Magdeburg since 2006. The stadium is on the east side of the Elbe and was previously called Stadion Magdeburg and MDCC-Arena; since July 2024 it has carried the name Avnet Arena. Many supporters still name it after Heinz Krügel, the coach behind the club's greatest successes. It holds 30,098, of whom almost half on terracing.
1. FC Magdeburg were founded in 1965 and were champions of the GDR three times. In 1974 the club won the European Cup Winners' Cup, the only East German club ever to win a European trophy. In the 2026/27 season Magdeburg play in the 2. Bundesliga. The matches against Dynamo Dresden, who play in the same league, are among the most charged fixtures of the season.
Magdeburg Hauptbahnhof has InterCity connections to Leipzig and Hanover, among others. The nearest major airports are Leipzig/Halle, Berlin Brandenburg and Hanover. The Avnet Arena is on the east bank of the Elbe, on the Berliner Chaussee, at the address Heinz-Krügel-Platz 1. From the centre you cross the river. The Arenen tram stop is close to the ground; on matchdays extra trams run from the centre and the station.
