Hillsborough is one of England's classic grounds and has been the home of Sheffield Wednesday since 1899. The stadium was a venue at the 1966 World Cup and the 1996 European Championship. The heart of the ground is the Kop, the stand behind the goal that was once the largest covered stand in Europe.

Sheffield Wednesday were founded in 1867 and are one of the oldest professional clubs in the world. The club have been league champions four times and won the FA Cup three times. The historic rivals are city neighbours Sheffield United; together they contest the Steel City derby. In League One, where the club play in 2026/27, the matches against Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers are the Yorkshire fixtures with the most tension.

Hillsborough is in the Owlerton area, a few kilometres north-west of Sheffield city centre. The Supertram yellow line towards Middlewood stops at Leppings Lane, a few minutes' walk from the ground. From Sheffield station it is too far to walk; take the tram, the bus or a taxi. Bus routes 53 and 77 run from the bus station opposite the railway station to the ground in about fifteen minutes.

The difference with a regular ticket is the seat and the service: a good seat, a separate entrance and food and drink in a lounge before and after the match. Come well before kick-off and travel by tram, as the roads around the ground are busy on matchdays. After the match Penistone Road in front of the stadium is closed for a while and there are queues at the tram stop. The official capacity is 39,732, but safety requirements can mean fewer tickets are sold for a given match. If you are coming from further afield, Manchester Airport is the nearest major airport, with trains to Sheffield.
