The Heinz von Heiden Arena is the home of Hannover 96. The stadium opened in 1954 as the Niedersachsenstadion, the name by which many supporters still know it. It played a part in the 1974 World Cup and Euro 1988, and between 2003 and 2005 it was largely rebuilt as a dedicated football stadium. It holds 49,000, of whom about 8,000 on terracing.
Hannover 96 were founded in 1896 and became German champions in 1938 and 1954. In 1992 the club won the DFB-Pokal as a second-tier side. In the 2026/27 season Hannover 96 play in the 2. Bundesliga, as do arch-rivals Eintracht Braunschweig; the Niedersachsenderby between the two clubs is the match of the year.
Hannover Hauptbahnhof has ICE connections to Hamburg, Frankfurt and Munich, among others, and Hanover airport is fifteen minutes away by S-Bahn.
