Oakwell has been the home of Barnsley FC since 1888, making it one of the oldest grounds in English professional football. The name comes from a well and an oak tree that stood on the site when it was laid out. The club won the FA Cup in 1912 and spent one season in the Premier League in 1997/98. No club has played more seasons in the second tier of English football than Barnsley.

In the 2026/27 season Barnsley play in League One. The matches with the most at stake are the derby against Sheffield Wednesday and the clashes with other Yorkshire clubs, such as Huddersfield Town and Doncaster Rovers. Oakwell has an old-fashioned atmosphere, with a mix of old and new stands close to the pitch.

Barnsley lies between Sheffield and Leeds and is easy to reach by train. The nearest airport is Leeds Bradford; Manchester Airport offers more flights. Oakwell is on Grove Street, on the east side of Barnsley town centre. Barnsley Interchange station is about 800 metres away; the walk through the centre takes ten to fifteen minutes. From the station, trains run to Sheffield, Leeds and Huddersfield, among other places. Next to the ground are the Metrodome sports complex and the Queens Ground car park.

試合当日の実用情報

Arrive well before kick-off and walk from the station through the centre to the ground. If you come by car, you can park at Queens Ground or at the Metrodome, but the roads are busy after the match. Trains to Sheffield and Leeds run several times an hour, so Barnsley is also easy to visit from either of those cities.
